The Atkins diet is known as a variant fad diet, based on Dr Atkins’ diet invented in 1972, when he published a book called “Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution. This book encouraged the view that obesity was caused from the consumption of carbohydrates like sugar, fruit sugars like high fructose syrup and flour. According to the Atkins diet recommendations, one needed to minimize the intake of net amount of carbohydrates in order to decrease the desire to eat.

The principle of the Atkins diet is that you needed to reduce the carbohydrates you intake to an amount not greater than 20 net grams daily, by eating food such as salad and vegetables, such as asparagus, tomatoes, spinach, turnips, cauliflower, pumpkin and broccoli. In the Atkins diet, during the introduction phase, a person is permitted to consume 54 varieties of carbohydrates excluding legumes like green beens because these are noted as being too starchy. Foods that is permitted to be eaten in this period include meat, fish, shellfish, eggs and poultry. A person undergoing the died is also permitted to consume about 4 ounces of soft cheese, cheddar. olive oil, vegetable oil and butter. Any form of alcohol is not allowed in the diet.

Based on the Atkins diet recommendations, a person would need to drink approximately 2 litres of water daily, this is the equivalent of 8 glasses. While partaking in the Atkins diet, it may be possible that you may need to supplement your nutrients with multivitamins. The amount of food that you normally eat should have only sugar amounting to 20 grams and no greater than 100 grams in fat. According to the book, through these eating habits and regular exercise, it is possible to lose weight in the amount of 5-10 pounds within a week.


Nutrition experts are still debating the argument about whether or not the Atkins diet is actually healthy for people.
